Transitioning from the engineering world at Stanford University to becoming a beauty blogger might sound like a complete about-face for most people. But for Lindsay Rogers, the two went hand in hand. Her background in science was what lead her to the blogosphere and social media, and her love of beauty and fashion is what inspired her to create Belle Belle Beauty Media, a fashion and beauty focused social media consulting business. Here she talks about how she levereged her experience in consulting and social media into a successful beauty blog, Belle Belle Beauty.

Q: Talk a little about how your education evolved from a focus on science at Stanford University to a career in fashion and beauty consulting and writing?
A:
I think having an education with a science/technology background was the root of my interest in social media and beauty. I’d say Belle Belle Beauty is heavy on the skin care coverage and so much of skin care is about science. My winding career journey was a long one but I know I am following my passion now!

Q: Why did you decide to launch Belle Belle Beauty?
A:
So much of my social media consulting and freelance writing clients were blogs and websites. It was only natural for me to launch one of my own! And of course being a long time product junkie didn’t hurt.

Q: A big part of your career in fashion blogging and consulting has to do with social media. Can you talk a bit about that?
A:
I attribute most if not all of my success as a beauty blogger to social media, particularly Twitter. Connections and friendships founded on social media opened tons of doors for me. I also find it enjoyable, so I hope to do more social media consulting in the future.

Q: Where do you get ideas for your blog and for your fashion columns?
A:
I spend a good amount of time following other blogs. I also find Pinterest particularly inspiring. And I read a ton of fashion and beauty magazines.

Q: Who is your core audience? Do you focus on local beauty and fashion, or do you aim for a broader readership?
A:
Most of my readers are in large cities like Los Angeles and New York City. So I focus on national and international trends. But I have recently been more active in my local market. I have a beauty column in Oklahoma Magazine and make regular appearances on local television here in Tulsa.

Q: What is your favorite fashion and/or beauty secret for these colder months?
A:
This is my favorite time of year for fashion since we really can experiment with layering. Boots and scarfs are my favorite accessories. As for beauty, hydration is key. Face oils are a big innovation and I’ve found my dry skin drinks them up. Hydrated skin looks radiant, perfect for this festive season. Lipsticks have also come a long way, marrying creamy and hydrating formulas with tons of pigment, making a dark lip a breeze to wear.

Q: What are some of the best opportunities you’ve had as a fashion and beauty blogger?
A: Participating in Lucky Magazine’s FABB (Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference) for a couple of years was a great way to connect and learn. I’ve also grown really comfortable on television and I’m inspired to get a YouTube channel going.

Q: What are some of the most challenging aspects?
A:
Working from home and being one’s own boss requires a test in discipline.

Q: What are you PR pet peeves?
A:
I actually really enjoy the PR professionals I work with. But lately, I’ve noticed more PR firms get in touch via phone. I much prefer emails.

Q: Any tips for PR professionals who want to get in contact with you?
A:
Email me! I also love when PR professionals come up with unique stories or pitches to go with products they hope to have featured.
